Behold the power in God’s Healing
Teaching notes from Craig Stellpflug lecture 3/12/2011
Mark 9:14-29
Vs 14: Scribes were disputing without thinking, like a backwards wind. Thought they had the disciples trapped.
Vs 16: Jesus asked the scribes what they wanted with the disciples but a man from the throng answered instead. “I brought my child to ‘your house’ (Jesus and/or his disciples)”
Vs 17 ff : Alalos- Dumb spirit, (half grown child) child could not speak.
Had epilepsy, grand mal seizures and was shriveling up, withering away.
Vs 21: Instead of just casting out the spirit, Jesus asked the father, “How long have you been fighting this?” The father replied: “From infancy”. Jesus was establishing responsibility that was now being leveled at the disciples. Was it the child’s responsibility here or the father’s?
Vs 22: The father says “IF” but also shifts from the child to “us” meaning the child and the whole household that was affected. “IF” tells you that there is a doubt going on.
Vs 23: Jesus puts the “IF” back where it belonged. At the feet of the father. It is a conditional clause. Do this, you get that. Don’t do this and you won’t get that.
Vs 24: Lord I believe! Help thou mine unbelief. Doubt, help me with what is holding me back. Biblical tears of either of genuine grief or longing. Psalm 56:8
Pisteuo ~ Believe - faith.
Apistia ~ A-pisteuo Lack of or absence of believing
Romans 10:13-17 Whosoever is whosever. Saved - Sozo (Gr) ~Delivered, healed, made whole 10 out of 10 times. Preacher - Karusso ~ herald, public crier, one who proclaims.
Hebrews 11:1 Faith is the title deed to things you can’t see, hear, smell, taste or touch yet.
Vs 2: By faith elders got a good report.
Vs 3: By faith we think things through to understand…
Vs 4: By faith Abel
Vs 5: By faith Enoch
Vs 6 Without faith it is impossible to please God.
Vs 7: By faith Noah
Vs 8: By faith Abraham
Vs 11: By faith Sara believed in God’s pistos
Vs 13 These all died in faith without seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting or touching the promises they did homologeo ~spoke the same things over and over.
Heb 4:2 Not mixed with faith = no profit
James 2:14- The word of God is about profit.
Vs 15-16 Faith is not something you give away. It is something you hold, confess, nourish and enjoy. Echos ~ resounds not ergon ~ effort.
Vs 17 All the faith in the world won’t work without action. It is dead and has no profit.
James 1:22 Be doers, connotes action.
I Cor 13:1-2 This is the other way that faith is dead. Of no profit. Remember the destitute fellow in James 2? If you act in faith and fulfill his need but do it without the love of God it profits YOU nothing.
Mat 17:18 Is recounting the Luke incident from another perspective
Vs 19 Here is the teachable moment
Vs 20 Relates faith to a mustard seed. You can’t “have more faith”. A seed is a seed and it produces results when it germinates. A bigger grain of mustard seed will still produce just a mustard tree and not a tumbleweed or an oak tree. You can demonstrate your faith.
Luke 17:5 The apostles wanted Jesus to increase their faith.
Jude 1:20 building upon faith and not building up faith.
You nourish and germinate your faith with homologeo, action, the love of God and prayer. So many of us plant our faith and then while it is still a plant we plow it under out of impatience and replant something else.
I Pr 1:7 The trial of you pistos
James 1:3 The trial of your faith brings a complete work of patience
Luke 21:19 In your patience posses ye your souls.
Heb 11:13 Grammatically, “these all” includes all the preceding and all the following. These all died according to faith.
Vs 17-19 Abraham by faith
Vs 20 By faith Isaac
Vs 21 by faith Jacob
Vs 22 Joseph
Vs 23-30 Moses
Vs 31 Rahab
Vs 32-40 others
Heb 12:1-4 Jesus authored and finished faith. We can persevere or grow weak by choice.
Math 21:21 doubt is the faith killer
Two kinds of unbelief:
Apisteuo ~ have heard but not heard enough to believe
Apitheuo ~ have heard repeatedly but refuse to believe = apathy
Mark 9:19 Apistos generation.
Mark 11:23 doubt in heart
Rom 11:30 Concluded them in apitheuo
Eph 2:2 Children of apathy
Eph 5:6 what really pisses off God? Apathy… Figure of Speech Condescensio
Col 3:5-6 Apathy
Heb 4:6-11 falling by example of apathy
Rom 14:1 weak = immature in pistos
Mark 9:28 disciples asked “WHY”?
Math 17:21 Not the man’s fasting and prayers - all things are possible. “This kind act”. This passage was actually a scribe’s note not included in some translations.
Conclude with Mark 16:17 ff
Help thou mine unbelief!
